That’s not happening, which means the demographics who are supposed to be empowered, inspired or just entertained by their comparatively inclusive cast, crew and/or narratives aren’t seeing them. It would be even nicer if moviegoers showed up to these films in numbers large enough to make them actual commercial successes. It’s nice studios are finally making movies like The Kitchen (a mob drama starring Melissa McCarthy, Tiffany Haddish and Elizabeth Moss), George Tillman Jr.’s The Hate U Give (based on Angie Thomas’ #BlackLivesMatter-related novel), A Wrinkle in Time (directed by Ava DuVernay and starring Storm Reid), Alita: Battle Angel (directed by Robert Rodriguez and starring Rosa Salazar) and Dora and the Lost City of Gold. 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' Walt Disney and Marvel It’s neat that John Boyega was the star of Pacific Rim: Uprising “just because,” but that $150 million flick earned just $290 million worldwide. It’s great that Jennifer Nelson Yu directed Amandla Steinfeld in the YA fantasy The Darkest Minds, but that film earned just $41 million worldwide (including just $12 million domestic) on a $32 million budget. So, sad to say, strides made elsewhere tend to play to empty auditoriums. It matters, for better or worse, because audiences are far more likely to see a Marvel/DC comic book superhero movie than almost any other potential “big” flick. It’s not just because “You can’t be what you don’t see” representation, or because it doesn’t mean much for Hollywood to tout empowerment narratives without actually empowering “not a white guy” creatives via key employment opportunities. It’s a big deal that at least three out of four of these, without knowing for sure who gets the biggest spotlights in The Eternals, are wholly female-fronted. And, yes, it’s a big deal, in terms of promised “not a white guy” representation in superhero cinema, that all four have female directors, two of them Chinese American no less. Zhao is coming off The Rider, Yan is following up Dead Pigs while Shortland has The Berlin Syndrome, Lore and Somersault to her name. Jenkins has been doing acclaimed TV work for a decade, but she was still primarily known for Charlize Theron’s Oscar-winning serial killer drama Monster. Steven Williams, Derek Wilson, Dana Lee, François Chau, Matthew Willig, and Ali Wong have been cast in undisclosed roles. All four of these likely hits, relative to cost and expectation, are helmed by acclaimed indie filmmakers who got the keys to a big comic book franchise. In Birds of Prey, Harley joins forces with Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), and Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez) to help protect Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco) from Black Mask (Ewan McGregor). The movie also stars Charlene Amoia as Maria Bertinelli, Chris Messina as Victor Zsasz. Over the years she resigned from the police force, disgusted by its corruption. The upcoming DC movie isn’t the first time someone has portrayed Montoya, since she made her live-action debut on Gotham‘s first season played by Victoria Cartagena. Renee Montoya made her debut in Batman: The Animated Series as a detective from the Gotham City Police Department assigned to the Major Crimes Unit.
